Those of you who were with me on the journey of opening Birch Handmade, not so long ago, are probably scratching your heads wondering if I've lost my mind altogether. And while that may be true, I hope that you'll all join me again while I embark on yet another store opening. This time, right in my adopted hometown of Woodstock NY!
Still Life Mercantile will be an extension and evolutionary step forward from Birch Handmade. Still encompassing handmade goods with a focus on small, sustainable, independent businesses, this store will also include my most recent business venture, vintage!, which I've been selling at Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene since April. I've been keeping some of my best finds exclusively for the store, so if you're familiar with my booth at the Flea which is always teeming with mid-century kitchen, housewares and tabletop goods, heavy on the bright colors, enamelware and Pyrex, you'll be happy to know those themes will be in full-effect in the store. This store will also have a home furnishings element, including decorative and functional pieces (think lamps, vases, pitchers, Oh My!). AND, as if all that wasn't enough, there will be a small, well-edited selection of clothing bearing the store's own private label, and shoes (more details on that as they transpire).
Wow, seeing it all down in words makes me realize its a lot for one little store, but this whole journey into retail stardom(?) has been nothing if not an attempt to cram all of the many many elements of design, craft and art that vie for my attention under one roof. Hence the new name--- STILL LIFE MERCANTILE.
And for now, no official opening date, but lets just say, the paint is drying, the dust is settling, and there are fun things going on behind the paper curtains...stay tuned!
